The honest answer? It depends.
Unlike many adult clothing sizes, baby clothing isn't standardized. The age printed on the tag is really just a guideline. Babies grow at their own pace, and two babies born on the same day can wear completely different sizes.
The good news is that once you understand a few basics, choosing the right size becomes much easier.
Age Is Only Part of the Story
When you see labels like Newborn, 0–3 Months, or 6–9 Months, it's natural to assume they're based strictly on age. In reality, most manufacturers design their clothing around a combination of height and weight, using age as a general reference.
That's why a long, lean six-month-old may already be wearing 9-month clothing, while another baby the same age is still comfortably fitting into 3–6 month outfits.
Every baby follows their own growth curve, and that's completely normal.

Why Do Some Brands Fit Differently?

Although the sizes sound similar, 24 Months and 2T aren't exactly the same.
In general, 24-month clothing is still designed with babies in mind. You'll often find a little extra room for diapers, more snaps for easy changes, and proportions that suit younger toddlers.
2T clothing is made for children who are becoming more active. The fit is often slightly trimmer, and many styles assume a child is beginning the transition away from diapers.
If your child is still wearing diapers, you may find that 24-month clothing offers a more comfortable fit. If they're always on the move and growing into toddler proportions, 2T may be the better choice.
Five Tips for Buying the Right Size
1. Think beyond age. Height and weight are usually better indicators than birthdays.
2. When in doubt, size up. Babies grow quickly, and a little extra room often means they'll get more wear out of an outfit.
3. Expect some variation. Different brands have different fits, and that's perfectly normal.
4. Consider the season. A winter sweater purchased in August may not be worn until several months later, so planning ahead can be helpful.
