The first days of school have come and gone. The new backpacks have been packed, the first-day outfits have been worn, and families are settling back into their routines.
And now something interesting starts to happen.
We find out what kids actually want to wear.
It might be the sweatshirt that somehow makes its way out of the laundry and right back into rotation. The jeans that look great but are comfortable enough to sit in all day. The sweater that feels almost as easy as a sweatshirt. Or the matching set that makes getting dressed in the morning one less decision to make.
At Jules, we think those are the pieces that really matter.
Comfort Doesn't Have to Mean Giving Up Style
One of the things we've noticed in this season's collections is how much the line between comfortable clothing and fashionable clothing has changed.
Sweatshirts and sweatpants aren't simply clothes for lounging anymore. Happy Camp3r takes familiar comfort pieces and gives them personality through color, graphics, wide-leg silhouettes, matching sets, and details that make them feel like an outfit rather than something thrown on.
Vintage Havana does something similar with its denim-blue bandana-print French terry crewneck and wide-leg pants. They're soft, relaxed pieces, but the print and silhouette make the set feel current and intentional.
That's exactly the balance we're looking for when we buy for Jules: clothing kids want to put on because it feels good, but that also lets them express their own style.
Denim Is Getting More Comfortable—and More Interesting
Denim remains one of the hardest-working parts of a fall wardrobe, but today's choices go well beyond the traditional skinny jean.
This fall we're seeing relaxed and wide-leg silhouettes from brands like Tractr, including carpenter-inspired denim and low-rise wide-leg jeans with patch pockets. The shapes feel fresh, but they're also practical: they're easy to pair with a sweater, sweatshirt, tee, or jacket and can create completely different looks from the same pair of jeans.
DL1961 brings another perspective with pieces like the Reese Denim Jacket and coordinating Selina Wrap Skirt. The utility-inspired details and warm fall tones offer something different while still giving you pieces that can be separated and worn throughout the wardrobe.
That's important to us. A great piece shouldn't have only one outfit built around it.
Sweaters That Kids Will Actually Wear
We love a beautiful sweater. But if it's uncomfortable, overly fussy, or difficult to style, there's a good chance it will spend more time folded in a drawer than being worn.
This season's sweaters give us another option.
The KatieJ NYC Briar Sweater brings an all-over cable knit to an easy, slightly cropped silhouette. Vintage Havana pairs classic grey and navy stripes with an unexpected denim collar. Rylee + Cru offers knits that feel timeless but still work with the more relaxed silhouettes kids are wearing today.
These are sweaters that can go with wide-leg jeans or skirts, be dressed up when needed, and still feel comfortable enough for an ordinary school day.
That's the kind of versatility we look for.
Sometimes the Best Outfit Is the Easiest One
There's also something to be said for the matching set.
Happy Camp3r has become an important part of our Tween and Junior collections because it understands something kids already know: comfortable can still be cool.
A hoodie and matching sweatpants solve the morning outfit question without looking like you gave up on getting dressed. The Puff Series, graphic sweats, wide-leg styles, and other coordinating pieces can be worn together one day and separated the next.
A hoodie works with jeans. The sweatpants work with a tee or sweater. Suddenly two pieces can create several outfits.
For parents trying to build a wardrobe that actually gets worn, that matters.
Style Becomes More Personal as They Grow
The Tween and Junior years are also when clothing starts becoming more personal.
Kids begin developing stronger opinions about what they like—and what they don't. A parent may be thinking about quality, fit, versatility, and value. Their child may simply be asking:
“Do I like it?”
“Is it comfortable?”
“Does this feel like me?”
We don't think those priorities have to compete.
Our goal at Jules is to find clothing that can satisfy both sides of that conversation: quality and comfort parents can appreciate, with style kids are excited to wear.
That might mean the Tippy Polka Dot Dress or Erin Sweater from KatieJ NYC. It might be a pair of Tractr wide-leg jeans. It could be a Happy Camp3r matching set, a Vintage Havana sweater, or a Rylee + Cru dress that works for something special but doesn't feel too precious to actually wear.
The individual pieces may be very different. The philosophy behind choosing them isn't.
Build the Wardrobe Around the Favorites
A few weeks into the school year is actually a great time to take another look at the closet.
Instead of asking, “What else do we need to buy?”, try asking:
What are they already wearing?
Which jeans keep coming back into rotation? Do they reach for sweaters or sweatshirts? Are dresses actually being worn? Do they prefer relaxed pants? Are they constantly looking for another hoodie?
Those answers can tell you far more about what they need for fall than any trend report can.
Maybe the goal isn't more clothes.
Maybe it's more of the right clothes—pieces that fit well, feel good, hold up, work together, and help kids feel comfortable being themselves.
That's the wardrobe we're trying to build at Jules.
And as fall gets underway, we'd love to hear from you. What are your kids actually wearing? What are they asking for? And what do you wish were easier to find?
We're always listening.
